From Attention to Joint Attention: A Spectrum of Challenges for Speech-Language Pathologists

This course will review common Developmental-Behavioral Disorders that impact the practicing Speech/Language Pathologist. The workshop will start with a review of the history of Autistic Spectrum Disorders and highlight for the clinician key aspects of their unique developmental profile, which may be present during diagnostic and therapeutic interventions. The current state of understanding as to the causes of this disorder will be reviewed. The workshop will then review the evidence for Central Auditory Processing Disorders as a diagnostic entity and discuss their role as part of a comprehensive assessment of a child's developmental functioning. This will lead to a final discussion about Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder and it's impact upon the therapy for children with co-morbid speech/language disorders.

1. Discuss the basic concepts of Autism Spectrum Disorder
2. Describe the medical evidence for Central Auditory Processing Disorder
3. Explain the impact of ADHD on the child’s experience in school and in therapy
